Leadership Strategy - Retreat to Get a Running Start

Peaceful Warrior”When we feel stuck, going nowhere – even starting to slip backward – we may actually be backing up to get a running start.”—Dan Millman (see recommended books - DVD)

We all have dreams - some of us have the persistence and courage to take action on our dreams. Even for the brave of heart committed to their heart's desire, life happens and asks us to retreat from our dreams. Ever since Dan Millman was a child jumping on the trampoline he started to dream of winning an Olympic Gold Medal. Dan attended UC Berkeley where he was on the team training for Olympic qualifications. His grades were above average. He had a good relationship with his parents and had no shortage of intimate relationships. With all his external earned good fortune, he still had sleepless nights.

On occasion when he couldn't sleep, he would get up and take a walk. It was during such a walk that Dan Millman met a man he called Soc for Socrates. From this initial meeting, Dan's life would never be the same. Socrates would become Dan's teacher/guide.

One of the first questions Socrates directed to Dan was: "Are you happy?" Dan was taken by surprise and quickly defended his happiness by all the material things and girlfriends available to him when he wanted. Soc countered back with the question: "Then what keeps you up at night and you can't sleep?"

Thus began Dan's organic quest of self-awareness.

Take some time today to reflect on the questions Dan was asked by his mentor. Are You Happy? I would love to hear your answers. Send them to me via email or post them in the "Comments" below!
